Polarizer

Light reflecting off water becomes polarized, i.e. the electromagnetic rays oscillate in one plane only. Photography in bright days with clouds, lakes, glass, etc is difficult given the scattering effect of these mediums. I recently was able to play with a polarizing filter. One can see how cutting away this scattered light increases the clarity of photos dramatically.

Here is a photograph of a boat with the filter in the proper orientation.

Remove the filter and one can see how scattered the light becomes.

The filter is useful for seeing through water.
